Canada Work Permit

WORK PERMIT IN CANADA

Foreign nationals can work in Canada provided they have a valid job offer that they got offered from a company supported by the Labour Market Impact Assessment (LMIA). However, there are some exceptions to this as well.

The two main types of work permit allowed in Canada are: Employer-specific work permit and Open work permit.

Employer-Specific Work Permit

The work permit is issued to an employee when an employer grants them a valid job.

Open Work Permit

In the open work permit, the applicant works under any employment, but not for those that do not comply with labour requirements (escort services, erotic dance etc.).  For the open work permit, there is no need for an offer letter or LMIA.

Process :

Before applying for a work permit, the applicant must have a job offer, except under certain circumstances. Along with that, they need to apply for a Labour Market Impact Assessment (LMIA) from Employment and Social Development Canada (ESDC). The validity for the work permit is 4 years.
